Transport Mappings

Status

Syslog-protocol has the idea of a layered approach with the ability to use multiple transport mappings. It was asked whether an UDP-mapping should be insight -protocol and also it was asked if it is a good thing to actually keep -protocol totally transport ignorant. For more details, please see the first post that created this issue.

Status: SOLVED

The syslog/udp transport mapping will be done in a separate paper AND this protocol mapping will be REQUIRED in -protocol. Additional mappings are optional.

Rainer Gerhards [2004-02-03] creates this issue
David Harrington [2004-02-04] says that at least one transport mapping should be defined and be REQUIRED. [David backs this with his SNMP experience, he is co-chair of the SNMP WG]
David Harrington [2004-02-04] says that he thinks the risk of "wild" transport mappings is low
Anton Okmianski [2004-02-05] agrees that there should be at least one mapping, but questions if it makes sense to REQUIRE UDP
Rainer Gerhards [2004-02-05] finds good points in a REQUIRED minimum transport and re-iterates the question if it should be part of -protocol or not
Marshall T. Rose [2004-02-05] says a separate RFC for transport is a good idea because it will clearly associate the transport's security issues with the transport
Rainer Gerhards [2004-02-06] tries to sum up current concensus and asks if the summary is right. Asks how to proceed in regard to separate transport mapping document or not.
Chris Lonvik [2004-02-06] concludes that there should be a separate RFC for the UDP transport mapping. This message was sent out in parallel with Rainer's message but it can be taken as an answer to it.
