Should there be a TRAILER?

It was questioned if a TRAILER is needed in syslog-protocol. The idea of a trailer was first introduced in draft-ietf-syslog-protocol-01.txt.

This issue was created by Rainer Gerhards while editing for version -02.

To solve this issue, issue 9 must be solved first.

Status: SOLVED

The solution to issue 9 dictates that the suggested trailer can not be used. Please see issue 9 to learn the full reasoning.

• Rainer Gerhards [2004-01-28] asks if a trailer should be present
• Anton Okmianski [2004-01-28] says "maybe" and creates issue 9 by telling us that control characters may be present in the message
• Anton Okmianski [2004-02-06] concludes that TRAILER can not be used because MSG can contain LF as a legitimate character
• Rainer Gerhards [2004-02-06] agrees to Anton and says that TRAILER actually is a transport issue and as such -protocol is the wrong place to define it.
• It looks like trailer is solved and will disappear.
