David Harrington suggest that the enterprise ID, a unique qualifier of the vendor who generated the message, should be part of the syslog message. It needs to be seen whether or not there is concensus in the WG to support this.

Enterprise IDs (numbers) stem back to SNMP.

• David Harrington [2004-01-26] suggest that the enterprise ID should be included.
• draft-ietf-syslog-protocol-02 [2004-02-02] contains it (in a very rough form)
• Anton Okmianski [2004-02-04] asks some very good questions. In short: is it worth the trouble?
• David Harrington wrote some comments, but the mail somehow never got delivered. We are currently waiting for it to be re-created.
• Rainer Gerhards [2004-03-29] suggests that the enterprise-id is move into the origin SD-ID
• Albert Mietus [2004-03-30] says, in a very long post, that the ID is not an mandatory field and should not be in the header.
• The enterprise ID has been moved into the the optional "origin" SD-ID in draft-ietf-syslog-protocol-04.
